Development profile of ECLAC associate members: statistical report on the economic, social and environmental situation

30 December 2024 | Publication

This study presents a statistical analysis of the situation of AMCs, based on the data that is available, shedding light on their distinct circumstances. It reveals that while AMCs boast higher GDP per capita than many Caribbean member States, their economies have had low growth and are highly dependent on trade, with some territories recording concerning levels of public debt. Socially, the AMCs face an ageing population, varied poverty levels, and have disparate social protection systems. Environmentally, they face challenges due to disasters arising from natural hazards, although there has …

Methodological recommendations on the measurement of the quality of household survey figures

9 September 2024 | Publication

This document begins with a diagnosis of the practices used by the region’s national statistical offices to measure the quality of estimates, particularly those yielded by household sample surveys. A conceptual framework related to the scope of the study is provided below, with a particular focus on replicated weight techniques for estimating sampling errors. Based on the review of the literature carried out, the various quality criteria that can be used to determine the statistical quality of estimates are presented in a logical order, and a work flow for applying the examined quality criteri…

Guidelines for mainstreaming the gender perspective in statistical production

2 September 2024 | Publication

In order to generate data that accurately capture the persistence and magnitude of societal inequalities, the gender and intersectional perspectives must be mainstreamed into statistical production. As noted in the Montevideo Strategy for Implementation of the Regional Gender Agenda within the Sustainable Development Framework by 2030 (2016), it is also crucial for “transforming data into information, information into knowledge and knowledge into political decisions” (ECLAC, 2017a). Official statistics are therefore an indispensable source of information for use in the design and implementatio…

Recommendations for measuring perceptions in household surveys

24 July 2024 | Publication

Recent years have seen a growing international interest in incorporating information on how citizens perceive and evaluate well-being into the monitoring of social progress. The emerging consensus maintains that conventional measurements of well-being are insufficient to provide a complete overview of quality of life. In turn, the recent wave of protests in different parts of the world, together with the crises in labour markets and in health, education and care systems, further aggravated by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, has underscored the need to make progress with measuring …

Subnational accounts: selected indicators for Latin America and the Caribbean

19 July 2024 | Publication

The main purpose of this issue is to describe the current status of subnational accounts in Latin America and the Caribbean, to detail the methodological considerations underpinning the estimates and to present, on the basis of available data, indicators that are published and disseminated through CEPALSTAT. To illustrate the possibilities that subnational accounts offer and the inferences that can be made from such accounts, three countries of the region were selected for practical exercises: Colombia, Mexico and the Plurinational State of Bolivia. These countries offer a small sample of how …

T…

The Portal of inequalities in Latin America

30 April 2024 | Publication

As a region, Latin America is characterized by high levels of inequality, reflected in both concentration of income and wealth and in large gaps in various areas of well-being among different population groups. Statistical information is vital in raising awareness of these gaps and in facilitating design and implementation of public policy to reduce disparities. To contribute to analysis of this regional problem, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has developed a new tool to view information on the inequalities that exist in different areas in Latin American co…
