Disability, human rights and public policy in the Caribbean: A situation analysis

This study presents a situation analysis of persons with disability in the Caribbean. It includes a compilation and analysis of national census data from 16 countries including data from both the 2000 and the 2010 census rounds. The study also assesses national laws, policies and programmes in the context of relevant international treaties and agreements. The gradual abatement of rural-urban migration in Latin America and the Caribbean is leading to growing prevalence of migration between cities, a phenomenon about which little theory or empirical studies have been developed in the region. Addressing capacity gaps in the production of the SDG indicators in the Caribbean

The Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Indicator Framework is endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission as the monitoring mechanism for the 169 targets and more than 230 indicators of the SDGs. Reporting of these indicators will pose a formidable challenge to the Caribbean given the statistical capacity of countries of the subregion. Impact of the Guaranteed Health Plan with a single community premium on the demand for private health insurance in Chile

In 2012, a Guaranteed Health Plan for the private health system was submitted to the Chilean National Congress, with the aim of offering a standardized flat-rate health-care plan. This paper evaluates the impact that the introduction of this plan would have on the demand for health insurance. The results suggest that the private insurance portfolio would shrink by 12.39%, which means that around 400,000 people would switch to the public system, thereby exacerbating the adverse-selection problem faced by the system and imposing an additional fiscal burden of US$ 200 million per year.…
