As part of ECLAC's commemoration of World Population Day 2026, the webinar will highlight the growing relevance of demographic analysis for understanding emerging challenges and opportunities in areas such as education, climate change and sustainable development.
Notas de Población is the scientific journal specializing in demography and population studies published by the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Centre (CELADE) -ECLAC'S Population Division. With over 50 years of history, its purpose is to disseminate studies on the population of Latin American and Caribbean countries. The views expressed in the journal are those of the authors and may not coincide with those of CELADE-ECLAC Population Division.
The central theme of the webinar is the ongoing age transformations and their impacts on public policies in education and the environment. As is well known, the demographic transition is characterized by profoundly reshaping long-term population growth — reducing it and even turning it into a negative — as well as the demographic structure, as populations age. But this age reshaping has several phases, different expressions and, above all, varying socioeconomic, cultural and environmental impact depending on the country being analyzed. Among these impacts are those stemming from the decline in birth rates and their effect on the number of births and subsequently on the age groups targeted by different levels of education. On the other hand, there are those linked to patterns of energy consumption and CO2 generation, which depend on several factors, including age and, at the aggregate level, the age structure of the population.
While the impact of the reduction — both relative and absolute — in the school-age population on education systems is predictable, direct and likely to generate opportunities and financial room to eventually improve coverage and quality of education across the region, the impact of ageing on the generation of pollutants, and CO2 in particular, is more complex and dependent on interactions between age and other variables associated with these emissions. As a result, there is uncertainty and ongoing debate about the ultimate direction of this impact. Regardless of this difference, the conceptualization of both impacts and their quantitative estimation are relevant both from an academic standpoint and from a public policy perspective.
In this regard, Notas de Población has recently published two articles addressing these two implications of age reshaping: "Impacts of Age Structure on CO2 Emissions in Brazil (2002–2016)" by Jamaika Prado, Alain Hernández Santoyo and Thiago Costa Soares, published in issue 121, and "The Impact of Declining Birth Rates on Education Systems in Latin America" by Simone Cecchini, Mariana Huepe, Martín Guillermo Scasso and Alejandro Vera, published in issue 122..
