The first meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC was held in Santiago, Chile, from May 9 to 11, 2001.
This meeting marked the launch of the Conference as the main regional body for statistical coordination and approved its initial work program. It also defined modernization strategies and strengthened cooperation among countries, establishing the institutional and technical foundations for the development of official statistics in the region.
The main achievements of the first meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC were:
- Formal launch of the Conference as the main regional body for statistical coordination.
- Approval of the 2001-2002 International Statistical Work Program, with an emphasis on economic, social, and environmental statistics.
- Definition of guidelines for modernizing statistical systems, including methodologies, institutional management, and information dissemination.
- Promotion of the implementation of the 1993 System of National Accounts (SNA 1993) and the strengthening of basic statistics.
- Promotion of regional cooperation and election of the first Executive Committee (2001-2003), consolidating the governance of the regional statistical system.
During the Conference’s closing session, Brazil took over as Chair of the Statistical Conference of the Americas for the 2001-2003 period. The new Executive Committee is also made up of Belize, Canada, Chile, Spain, Panama, and Peru.
