Earth Observations for Sustainable Development Goals in the Americas Region

7 April 2021|Event

This is a side-event of Twentieth meeting of the Executive Committee of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC, organized by INEGI of Mexico.

The use of Earth Observations (EO) represents an opportunity to obtain reliable, timely and continuous information, which, integrated with geospatial information and official statistics in the national information system, allows to directly support the monitoring and measurement of the SDG indicators, thus as well as policy formulation.

The Earth Observations for Sustainable Development Goals (EO4SDG), an international initiative from the Group on Earth Observations, serves a fundamental role to advance global knowledge about effective ways that Earth observations and geospatial information can support the SDGs. The Initiative seeks to advance the benefits of the SDGs through sustained, effective use of Earth observations.

This session will review country good practice examples in the use and promotion of Earth Observation solutions to monitor and calculate the SDG indicators in the Americas region, specifically the case of Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Mexico. The session will focus on strengthening connection between EO community and statistical community in monitoring and reporting SDG indicators. Likewise, it will review two initiatives in the region related to the use of Earth Observations for Sustainable Development Goals: Earth Observations Toolkit for Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements and the Regional Open Data Cube.
