Background

In May 2014, at the thirty-fifth session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC)  the member States decided  by virtue of resolution 682 (XXXV) to establish the Regional Conference on Social Development in Latin America and the Caribbean as a  subsidiary body of the Commission. The decision was made given the Commission’s consistent collaboration to assist  inter-institutional coordination among  countries of the region, international organizations and national organisms that promote social development and that carry out projects in that realm.

The Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Social Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (RCSD), as agreed at the Fifth Meeting of the Regional Conference on Social Development in Latin America and the Caribbean held in Santiago under the chairmanship of Chile in October 2023, are the following countries in the Vice-Chair: Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela. At that meeting, as stipulated in Resolution 5(V), the commitment was reiterated to advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the region, including its social dimension, and considering that the Regional Agenda for Inclusive Social Development (ARDSI) is a contribution to this process. The Technical Secretariat was also requested to provide assistance to the countries to move forward with the working groups on issues and policy areas identified for progress in a transformative recovery process. It is also expected to strengthen the region's message towards the Second World Social Summit for Social Development of 2025.
