Briefing note
(26 April 2013) Statistical experts and authorities from 20 Member States of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) meeting today in Pucón, Chile, took part in the closure of the Twelfth meeting of the Executive Committee of the ECLAC Statistical Conference of the Americas (ECLAC-SCA), where they agreed to analyse the post-2015 development agenda and the challenges for national statistics systems in Latin America at the seventh meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas.
At the next regional meeting scheduled for November 2013, participating countries will also review the development of basic economic statistics in the framework of the System of National Accounts, as well as capacity building for national statistical systems and offices to promote the quality and credibility of official statistics, and the progress and challenges of gender mainstreaming in statistics production.
At the 12th meeting of the Executive Committee of ECLAC-SCA, delegates used two seminars to analyse the following relevant issues for the region: the multidimensional measurement of poverty, as well as early warning signs and business indicators. Delegates also gave progress reports on the technical working groups operating in the framework of the Conference, including ones on the global strategy for improving agricultural and rural statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean, initiatives for the development of environmental statistics in the region and the development of security and justice statistics.
Participants agreed to reiterate the need for national statistical offices to take part in the production of national and subnational reports on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in order to ensure the use of statistical information that is appropriate to monitor MDGs using international standards and national/regional benchmarks.
Given how close the deadline is for achieving the MDGs (2015), delegates also agreed to call on member countries to reflect on the post-2015 development agenda and its short-and medium-term statistical challenges, while also emphasizing the need for international agencies to use statistics officially generated by countries when drafting their reports.
Furthermore, participants agreed to underscore the importance of having additional measurements for poverty using a multidimensional approach.
Delegates also approved the initiative to create a working group on public security and justice statistics, which would be formally created at the seventh meeting of the ECLAC Statistical Conference of the Americas, which will be held from 6 to 8 November 2013 in Santiago, Chile.
The Statistical Conference of the Americas is a subsidiary body of ECLAC that aims to promote the development and improvement of national statistics and work to ensure that they are comparable internationally, to promote international, regional and bilateral cooperation among national offices and international and regional agencies, and to draw up a biennial programme of activities to meet the demands of the countries of the region.
