(19 April 2013) Professionals with advanced studies in economics or related areas, as well as those interested in pursuing Masters or Doctorate programmes, have until 31 May to apply for the 2013 14th Summer School on Latin American Economies, which is organized by the Division of Production, Productivity and Management of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

By 7 June, the names will be announced of the successful candidates for this annual academic training programme, where ECLAC presents its most recent research on topics such as productive development, structural change, innovation, employment and equality.

Classes will be held at the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile, from 18 July to 30 September 2013.

The 14th Summer School will cover topics such as productive development and the role of structural change in sustaining growth and employment while improving income distribution. There will be a particular focus on the relationship between innovation and development, as well as Keynesian and Schumpeterian theories on growth.

The Summer School on Latin American economies was created in 2000 as the result of cooperation between ECLAC and Latin American and European universities interested in having economics students benefit from the experience and analysis in economic and social matters of this United Nations regional commission.

For the course, ECLAC makes available its staff and infrastructure at no cost for the selected students.  Students must fund their own accommodation and medical insurance in Chile (as ECLAC does not award grants). Classes will be in Spanish, but pupils must also be familiar with English.

The 2012 Summer School was attended by 26 university students from the following 13 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Italy, Mexico, Panama, Republic of Korea, Spain, United States and Venezuela.

Between 2000 and 2012, more than 350 students from over 150 world-renowned universities have attended the course.
