(23 September 2011) The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Chile, Alfredo Moreno, presented the book entitled "The United Nations in global governance. A Latin American and Caribbean perspective" during the thirtieth Ministerial Meeting of the Rio Group in New York.
The meeting was held on Friday 23 September in the context of the sixty-sixth session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, which started on 21 September and is scheduled until 30 September.
The book compiles the presentations and discussions held during the Regional Seminar "The United Nations in global governance" that took place on 8 and 9 August at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago. This activity was organized by this regional commission of the United Nations and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Chile.
"In the past few decades the structure of world governance has evolved a great deal in terms of the number and nature of international institutions and other schemes addressing a wide range of global issues," state Bárcena and Moreno in the introduction of the book.
The piecemeal nature of the global response to the financial and economic crisis of 2008, and the challenges of climate change, remind us that "we have yet to find governance mechanisms that are both effective and legitimate", say both representatives in the publication.
The book includes a presentation made by the President of the sixty-fifth session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Joseph Deiss, and other important national and international officials.
