Conference on "The Debt Crisis in Latin America 30 Years Later" to Be Held in Mexico

The event is organized by ECLAC, CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

(12 February 2013) The external debt crisis was a turning point in the economic history of Latin America and the Caribbean. This is the premise for the high-level conference to be held in Mexico City, Mexico, to analyse topics including the origins of the crisis three decades ago, global and Latin American responses, lessons learned, recent experiences in external financing and future prospects.

The ECLAC-CAF-GIZ-SEGIB-UNAM conference on "The debt crisis 30 years later" will be held on 18 and 19 February 2013 at the subregional headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Mexico.

The two-day event is organized by ECLAC, CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

The opening, which will take place at 9.00 a.m. on 18 February in Mexico City, will be attended by Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of ECLAC, Enrique García, Executive President of CAF, Enrique Iglesias, Ibero-American Secretary General of SEGIB, Verónica Villarespe, Director of Institute of Economic Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Luis Videgaray, Secretary of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico, Jan Peter Schemmel, Director of GIZ in Mexico, and Jacques Rogozisnki, Director General of Mexico's Nacional Financiera.

Presenters include renowned academics from the region and professionals that tackled the crisis within their respective governments, and they will share with participants their thoughts on what policy lessons for growth and equality can be learned from that crisis.
