New date: the Redatam Workshop "Processing census data for the generation of SDGs and 2030 Agenda monitoring indicators" will be held in May and exclusively in virtual mode

3 April 2020|Briefing note

Due the health contingency we face today because of COVID-19 we have redesigned the workshop and changed the traditional teaching modality to a completely virtual one, from Tuesday 5 to Wednesday May 13, 2020. The virtual modality implies changes in the teaching methodology, that is how this new 7-day course will be only three hours per day at a time that will accommodate all the participants. This course focus on the processing of population and housing censuses, using Redatam, in order to learn the software and explore the potential of censuses to obtain specific indicators for monitoring the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

The region faces substantive challenges related to data sources in order to measure real progress in achieving the SDGs and the development agendas objectives. However, population and housing censuses appears to be a primary source of information and should be considered as essential information for the calculation of the follow up indicators. Census are universal, they apply to the whole population within a country, they provide basic information at the dwelling household and person levels, allowing the socio demographic characterization of the population and its living conditions.

Likewise, census round 2020 is starting in many countries of the region. With 2010 and 2020 censuses available, it will allow to monitor the agenda 2030 through the comparison of the indicators.

Redatam offers key features for the processing of microdata, such as its hierarchical data structure, the friendly interface, data confidentiality, and at the same time, disaggregated processing and analysis for specific population groups.

This workshop offers the opportunity to process, analyze and map information from population and housing censuses with priority in the generation of indicators defined in the SDG goals which can be derived from censuses as the prime source with Redatam language. The indicators can be computed with the proposed disaggregation: urban rural areas, age groups, sex, disability, indigenous peoples, employment status, etc.

This workshop is organized in conjunction with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), within the framework of the “UNDA10 Program on Statistics and Data” project. As an activity related to this project, the draft of the technical report on the measurement of the SDG indicators based on data from the Population and Housing Census and Vital Statistics will be presented during the workshop.

  • Date: Tuesday, May 5 to Wednesday, May 13, 2020, time to be defined
  • Place: The course will be conducted in virtual form using a virtual platform (Webex or Zoom).
  • Language: the course will be taught in Spanish
  • Cost: USD $200 dollars or its equivalent in Chilean pesos (UN exchange rate for May).

Methodology

Given the health crisis of COVID-19 that we are suffering this year, we have redesigned the traditional methodology of face-to-face classes, designing a completely virtual course to be taught from our homes, using a virtual platform. This implies a change in the teaching methodology, in the content of the classes and in the communication with the facilitator. Classes will be taught in modules of maximum three hours per day, for seven days, and will be live, therefore, students must activate the application each day at a certain time to listen to the teacher and watch the exercises to then, practice them in class. Then, every day they will have an exercise to work on individually, which will be reviewed the next day.

The workshop will be held from Tuesday, May 5 to Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at a time that accommodates all participants in the region, which will be informed once we have the list of participants, so it is important that you send your registration form as soon as possible. The course will be evaluated with a final project that each student must do individually and present on the last day.

A total of 32 hours is estimated for this course, having three hours of virtual classes with a 15 minutes and 1.5 hours daily to work on the exercise individually. The cost of the course is US $ 200 dollars per person. An access code will be assigned to the participants who register once a copy of the registration fee is sent.

Regarding the programs to be used, a link will be sent to them along with the course access code to download all the programs, manuals and databases that will be used during the course. Each student is responsible for installing and testing such programs prior to the course.
