On October 20, 2025, the fourth edition of the United Nations World Statistics Day will be celebrated, a date commemorated every five years to highlight the importance of data in building a sustainable future. For the first time in history, the five United Nations Regional Commissions will organize a 24-hour global webinar marathon, a unique gathering that will bring together voices, experiences, and innovations from around the globe to showcase how data drives sustainable development and inclusive decision-making.
Statistics are much more than numbers: they are key tools for understanding reality, guiding the actions of governments, businesses, and citizens, and monitoring global challenges such as climate change, public health, and social inequalities. They make it possible to bring to light problems that would otherwise remain hidden, ensuring that no one is left behind.
This year's event will focus on the theme "Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for All", highlighting the fundamental role of statistics in public policymaking, decision-making, and progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
As part of the 24-hour virtual seminar, the Latin America and the Caribbean segment, coordinated by ECLAC, will bring together professionals from national statistical offices and central banks, regional and international organizations, academic institutions, and civil society. Through dynamic and inclusive discussions, the relevance of statistics in everyday life, their role in identifying social and economic gaps, the interaction between official statistics, civil society, and academia, and innovations in the production and dissemination of statistical information will be addressed.
