XIV Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean Will be Presented to the Media at ECLAC

This Friday, September 6, authorities from Chile and Uruguay along with representatives of ECLAC and UN Women will hold a press conference to unveil the details of the regional gathering that will take place in November in Santiago.

The preparations for and main themes of the XIV Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean – which will be held on November 4-8, 2019 at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile – will be shared with members of the media at a press conference this Friday, September 6, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the United Nations regional organization’s building.

The press conference will be led by Isabel Plá, the Minister of Women and Gender Equity of Chile, which is the host country of the XIV Regional Conference on Women, along with Alicia Bárcena, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary; María Noel Vaeza, Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women); and Mariella Mazzotti, Director of the National Women's Institute (INMUJERES) of Uruguay in her role as President of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference (via videoconference).

The Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean is the main intergovernmental forum on women’s rights and gender equality in the region. It is organized by ECLAC, as the Secretariat of the Conference, with the support of UN Women. It is convened regularly, at least every three years, to identify the situation of women’s autonomy and rights at the regional and subregional levels, present public policy recommendations for gender equality, and undertake periodic assessments of the activities carried out in fulfillment of regional and international agreements.

Participants in the Regional Conference meetings include ECLAC’s Member States, associate members and observers with consultative status. In addition, other entities attend as observers, including United Nations funds, programs and specialized organizations as well as other autonomous institutions, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations.
