Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, participated in the 1st Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU), which took place in Santiago, Chile, on 26 and 27 January and was attended by representatives from 60 countries.
During his stay in Chile, Mr. Eliasson held bilateral meetings with the Chilean President, Sebastián Piñera, as well as with other Heads of State and senior dignitaries from the region.
The Deputy Secretary-General also chaired the meeting of the Regional Coordination Mechanism, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and met with UN staff working in Chile.
