The Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean – which is the main regional discussion forum on gender equality and women’s autonomy – turns 40 years old, and its anniversary will be commemorated in the same place where the first gathering took place in 1977: Havana, Cuba.
On October 5-6, the Hotel Nacional de Cuba will be the site of the Fifty-Sixth Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the government of Cuba, through the Federation of Cuban Women.
At the meeting – which will draw female ministers and senior authorities from mechanisms for women’s advancement, international officials and representatives of civil society – homage will be paid to Vilma Espín, the first President of the Federation of Cuban Women and President of the First Regional Conference.
Also on the agenda are a high-level panel on the implementation of gender equality plans in the framework of sustainable development and the presentation of the repository of legislation on migration and gender, prepared by ECLAC’s Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean in conjunction with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Finally, participants will debate the theme of the position document for the XIV Regional Conference, scheduled for 2019 in Santiago, Chile.
The Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women, which is one of ECLAC’s nine subsidiary bodies, is made up of Uruguay, which holds the presidency, as well as Argentina, Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia and Suriname.
