Economist Mariana Mazzucato Will Give Prebisch Lecture at ECLAC

The author of the book The Entrepreneurial State: Debunking Public vs. Private Sector Myths will deliver a lecture on Tuesday, April 19 at the regional organization’s headquarters in Santiago, Chile.

Renowned Italian-American economist Mariana Mazzucato will deliver next Tuesday, April 19 the XIV Raúl Prebisch Memorial Lecture Series at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, where she will be received by the Executive Secretary of the United Nations regional organization, Alicia Bárcena.

Mazzucato, who is a Professor in the Economics of Innovation at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) of the University of Sussex, United Kingdom, will present at 11.00 a.m. a lecture entitled “Entrepreneurial State: Creation of Markets and Economic Development.”

The conference, which will be centered on the role of economic policy in setting both the pace and the direction of economic growth, will be broadcast live via Internet through ECLAC’s Website: ://www.cepal.org/en/eclac-live-2.

Mazzucato is the author of the book The Entrepreneurial State: Debunking Public vs. Private Sector Myths, which was on the 2013 Books of the Year list of the Financial Times. That same year she was included by the New Republic magazine among the “three most important thinkers about innovation.” In 2014 she was awarded the New Statesman/SPERI Prize in Political Economy and in 2015 she received the Hans Matthöfer prize. She is a member of various international panels and advises policymakers around the world on innovation-led growth.

The Prebisch Memorial Lecture Series was established in April 2001 to mark the 100-year anniversary of the birth of Argentine economist Raúl Prebisch, former Executive Secretary of ECLAC and one of its key inspirers. Major figures from Latin American economics have taken part in the Lecture Series.

Also through an invitation by ECLAC, Mazzucato will give a keynote lecture on Thursday, April 21 at 05:00 p.m. at the Auditorium of the Cultural Center of Science at Argentina’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (Godoy Cruz 2270, City of Buenos Aires). The Ministers of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Lino Barañao, and of Production, Francisco Cabrera, will be commenting on the conference, to be moderated by Mario Cimoli, Director of ECLAC’s Division of Production, Productivity and Management.
