Press Release
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will host from June 24 to June 26 the Second Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, which will be attended by delegates from the region’s countries whose main objective will be to define an operational guide on population and development measures.
This operational guide will be presented at the Second Meeting of the Regional Conference, which will be held in Mexico on October 6-9, and will serve as the basis for the implementation and follow-up of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development.
Adopted in 2013 by ECLAC’s member States and associate members, the Montevideo Consensus includes measures about respect for human rights, aging, childhood, indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant populations, migration, gender equality, sexual and reproductive health, and environmental vulnerability.
The Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean is a subsidiary body of ECLAC convened on a permanent basis. The Presiding Officers of this Conference serve as a link between the governments of member States and ECLAC’s Office of the Secretary to provide follow-up on this work.
Reports on the global process regarding the post-2015 development agenda will be presented during the meeting in June, along with follow-up to the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Beyond 2014 Program of Action.
The Presiding Officers elected at the First Meeting of the Regional Conference, held in Montevideo in August 2013, has Uruguay serving as President and Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru and the Dominican Republic as Vice Presidents.
