ECLAC Will Hold 34th Regional Seminar on Fiscal Policy to Analyze Fiscal Challenges in a Context of High Inflation and Low Growth

8 June 2022|Announcement

This annual gathering will take place on June 13-14 with the participation of authorities from the Finance Ministries of 11 Latin American and Caribbean countries.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will hold the XXXIV edition of the Regional Seminar on Fiscal Policy on June 13-14. For 34 years, this well-regarded regional forum has brought together authorities, specialists, members of civil society and academia to discuss the fiscal policy challenges being faced by the region’s countries.

The meeting features the participation of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and has support from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

The event’s participants will include authorities from the Finance Ministries of 11 of the region’s countries along with prominent experts from international organizations, academia, civil society groups and non-governmental organizations. Those attending will address the fiscal policy challenges for achieving a sustainable and inclusive recovery in a complex macroeconomic context marked by lower growth and rising inflation. In addition, they will analyze options for strengthening tax collection and the progressivity of the tax structure, the role of public spending as an instrument for development, and the future of fiscal rules in the region in light of the experience of the pandemic that began in 2020.

During the two-day gathering, ECLAC will publish the Fiscal Panorama of Latin America and the Caribbean 2022, in which the United Nations regional organization urges for a fiscal policy design that would bolster tax collection and the tax structure’s progressivity and would orient public spending strategically so it can serve as an instrument for development, with the aim of fostering sustainable and inclusive development.

Furthermore, in the framework of the 34th Fiscal Seminar, officials will present the results of the report entitled Revenue Statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean (2022 version), a publication prepared jointly by ECLAC, the OECD Centre for Tax Policy and Administration, the OECD Development Centre, the Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT) and the IDB.

Presenters will also discuss the Overview of Fiscal Relations between Levels of Government in Latin American and Caribbean Countries 2022, a joint report by ECLAC and the IDB that aims to provide a regional and national analysis of subnational public finances in the region’s countries.
