International instruments in support of older persons in Latin America and the Caribbean

15 Apr 2026 | Infographic

Along with other instruments, the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) contributes to the regional response to ageing and the human rights of older persons. Since the adoption of the MIPAA in 2002, its implementation has been reviewed and evaluated every five years at the regional level within the framework of the Regional Intergovernmental  Conference on Ageing and the Rights of Older Persons in Latin America and the Caribbean. This infographic presents, on the one hand, the trajectory of the MIPAA through the regional intergovernmental conferences and the declarations adopted by countries that guide government action; and on the other hand, the path of other key instruments that strengthen the protection and promotion of the human rights of older persons in the region.
