The eighth session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, convened by the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in compliance with ECLAC resolution 567(XXVII), was held in Lima, Peru, from 8 to 10 February 2000.

The eighth session of the Regional Conference had the function of evaluating the progress made in the region since the seventh session and since the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, 1995) and of making recommendations as to how to speed up the process of change with regard to the status of women, in accordance with the provisions of the Regional Programme of Action for the Women of Latin America and the Caribbean, 1995-2001, adopted at the sixth session of the Regional Conference (Mar del Plata, September 1994).

In addition, this session of the Conference served as the regional preparatory meeting for the special session of the General Assembly entitled “Women 2000: gender equality, development and peace for the twenty-first century”, which was held in New York in June 2000.
