The third meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago from 4 to 6 October 2016. The purpose of the meeting, among others, is to analyze and adopt the proposed format for national progress reports on the implementation of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development as well as to review the progress report of the ad hoc working group for the preparation of a proposal on the indicators for regional follow-up of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development.

The Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean is a subsidiary body of ECLAC established with ultimate responsibility for monitoring and reviewing issues relating to population and development, international migration, indigenous peoples and Afro-descendent populations, and ageing. The Conference meets every two years, while its Presiding Officers meet at least once between ordinary sessions. México currently chairs the Presiding Officers, with Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela (Bolivarian República of) as vice-chairs.

  • Adoption of the agenda.
  • Preparatory process of the third session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (El Salvador, 2017).
  • Contribution of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Reports by governments on national activities in preparation for the third session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, to be held in 2017, including progress on the establishment or strengthening of national coordinating mechanisms to act as a liaison with the Regional Conference.
  • Proposed format for the national progress reports on the implementation of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development that will be presented at the third session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2017.
  • Progress report of the ad hoc working group for the preparation of a proposal on the indicators for regional follow-up of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development, which will be presented at the third session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2017.
  • Other matters.
  • Consideration and adoption of agreements.

<p>The second meeting of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean was organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Government of Mexico through the National Population Council (CONAPO). Was entitled "Population dynamics as the axis of sustainable development: the implementation of the Montevideo Consensus to overcome inequalities in the framework of human rights."</p>

Countries in the Region Agree Operational Guide to Implement Measures on Population and Development

The Regional Conference on Population and Development, which concluded today its second session, will hold its next meeting in El Salvador in 2017.
