Economic Performance of Latin American and Caribbean Countries during 2017 will Be Analized in New ECLAC Report

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will present next Thursday, 3 August, its Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean 2017, a publication updating growth estimates for the region’s countries in the current year. ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, will present the report during a press conference that will be held at 11:00 a.m. (GMT – 04:00) at the organization’s headquarters in Santiago, Chile, and will be broadcast live via Internet at the institution’s Web site. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) updated growth projections for economic activity in the region in 2017 and forecasts a 1.1% average expansion for this year, the United Nations body stated today in a press release. Disasters, economic growth and fiscal response in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, 1972-2010

The aim of this study is to estimate the impact of geological and climate-related disasters on the per capita growth rates of gross domestic product (GDP) and fiscal expenditure in Latin American and Caribbean countries. The results show that the effects vary by type of disaster and by subregion. In the Caribbean countries, the per capita GDP growth rate has typically responded negatively to climate disasters, whereas the response to a geological disaster has generally not been statistically significant. El objetivo de este trabajo es estimar el impacto de los desastres climáticos y geológicos en la tasa de crecimiento del producto interno bruto (PIB) per cápita y la tasa de crecimiento del gasto fiscal per cápita de los países de América Latina y el Caribe. Thoughts on the inequality of opportunities: new evidence

This article evaluates the effects of a set of variables on the inequality of opportunities in Brazil, using the method developed by Li, Chen and Gao (2011) and combining data from the National Household Survey (PNAD) and Finanças do Brasil (FINBRA) on the Brazilian states for 1995-2012. The results show that economic growth has become less important in that debate than other conditioning factors over the last few years. The determinants of foreign direct investment in Brazil: empirical analysis for 2001-2013

This article aims to analyse the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) into Brazil between 2001 and 2013. It uses a vector error correction (VEC) model to analyse both the long-term function and the impulse-response function. The results show that levels of economic activity, wages and productivity are positively related to FDI inflows, which means that investors pursue market-seeking and efficiency-seeking strategies when targeting the Brazilian market. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar los determinantes del flujo de inversión extranjera directa (IED) hacia el Brasil entre 2001 y 2013. Para ello se empleó un modelo de vectores de corrección de errores (VEC) para el análisis de la función de largo plazo y de la función de impulso-respuesta.
