Ten Foreign Ministers and more than 20 Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Finance, Economy, Production, Trade, Planning, Social Development and Women’s Affairs from the region’s countries will participate in the thirty-sixth session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which will be held in Mexico City from May 23 to May 27.

The intergovernmental meeting, which will be inaugurated by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, will also be attended by the authorities responsible for statistics, cooperation, innovation and digital policy, among other areas, from around 35 of ECLAC’s Member States and Associate Members.

The opening ceremony will take place in the Bellas Artes Palace in Mexico, with the special participation of Federica Mogherini, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

At the meeting—where ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, will present the document Horizons 2030: Equality at the Centre of Sustainable Development—participants will analyze the opportunities and challenges posed for the region by follow-up and assessment of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the role that South-South Cooperation plays.

The event will also bring together researchers and scholars, officials from at least 23 intergovernmental organizations, specialized agencies and United Nations bodies, and more than 130 representatives from nearly 60 civil society organizations.

During five days of work, the delegates will participate in diverse seminars, discussions and thematic panels where they will address matters such as macroeconomics and global action for sustainable development, industrial policies for structural change, social policies for the equality of rights, South-South cooperation, and follow-up of the 2030 Agenda from a regional perspective, among other topics.

The complete program of ECLAC’s thirty-sixth session, along with general information about the meeting and a registration form for participants and journalists, is already available on the gathering’s special Web site: ://periododesesiones.cepal.org/36/es
