16 Oct 2025 | Briefing note

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) held the sixth meeting of the Regional Group of Experts on Water Resources, with the participation of representatives from international and national organizations and specialists from across the region.

Reunion

This space has established itself as a key forum for technical-political dialogue and coordination, allowing its members to share progress, identify challenges, complement work agendas, and promote cooperation networks related to the management of regional water resources.

During the session, the Regional Water Week 2025 was presented , to be held from October 6 to 10 in Santiago, Chile. It has been organized by ECLAC in conjunction with national institutions and other regional partners (CODIA, DGA, DIFROL, among others). Within this framework, the Fifth LAC Regional Water Dialogues were announced , which will take place on October 9 and 10 as a high-level strategic forum to discuss the main challenges of sustainable water management in the region.

During the meeting, ECLAC's leadership in consolidating the first Regional Water Week in Latin America and the Caribbean was highlighted, an unprecedented milestone for the region. Thanks to this effort, the active participation of the members of the Expert Group and multiple stakeholders has been fostered, not only in the main sessions but also in the organization of parallel events. This space represents a unique opportunity to showcase experiences, strengthen strategic alliances, generate regional synergies, and move toward more effective coordination around sustainable water management, reaffirming ECLAC's role as a catalyst for cooperation and innovation in the region's water agenda.

Finally, the results of this Regional Water Week are expected to transcend the regional sphere and serve as a basis for global forums such as the 2026 World Water Conference and COP30. Therefore, these events not only seek to influence the international agenda, speaking with one voice, but also to highlight and enhance initiatives underway in the region's countries. In this regard, the members of the Group were invited to share information on their recent projects and activities, with the aim of enriching ECLAC's next bulletin. This consolidates a collective effort aimed at giving greater visibility to local experiences, strengthening multilateral cooperation, and advancing sustainable and transformative solutions for water management in Latin America and the Caribbean.
