ECLAC contributes to debates on ageing, care and intergenerational solidarity at the Second World Summit for Social Development

The Director of CELADE – Population Division of the ECLAC, Simone Cecchini, contributed to dialogues on these issues at the Summit, which took place in Doha, Qatar, on 4-6 November 2025.

At the Second World Summit for Social Development –where the Doha Political Declaration was adopted to reaffirm global commitments to eradicate poverty, promote full and productive employment and decent work for all, and foster social inclusion– , the United Nations system, with contributions from CELADE – Population Development Division of the ECLAC, launched two important documents related to ageing and demographic change:

The Director of CELADE took part in three Solution Sessions, where discussions focused on demographic change, ageing and policy options to move towards a care society and better care services for older persons:

  • Building Age Friendly Cities and Communities for Inclusive Social Development, Solution Session on 4 November organized by the International Federation on Ageing in collaboration with the Governments of Canada and Spain, ECLAC, ESCAP, AARP, ILC and WHO.
  • The Future of Work, Care and Intergenerational Solidarity in Ageing Societies, Solution Session on 5 November organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) on behalf of all United Nations Regional Commissions (ECA, ECLAC, ESCAP, ESCWA and UNECE), with the Governments of the Philippines and Colombia, and in collaboration with the Standing Working Group on Ageing.
  • Transformative Governance for Caring Societies: Pathways Towards Inclusive Social Development, Solutions Session on organized by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) in collaboration with the Government of Chile; the International Labour Organization (ILO); UN Women; ECLAC; the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO); and the Global Alliance for Care.
