Topic(s)
The CEPALSTAT platform has incorporated new information and updated historical series of perception indicators based on surveys such as LAPOP, Latinobarometer, and Gallup, strengthening the availability of comparable data on democracy, trust, security, and well-being in the region.
The Data and Statistical Publications Portal, CEPALSTAT, of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), has incorporated and updated a set of perception indicators constructed from international surveys, expanding access to comparable information for the social and political analysis of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Among the main new features are new indicators from the Americas Barometer (LAPOP), covering 18 countries and series spanning the period 2004–2023. These indicators include trust in municipalities and the community, experiences of police bribery, victimization in the last 12 months, and support for an active role of the State in reducing inequality.
Likewise, the historical coverage of indicators based on LAPOP was expanded, extending its series to the period 2004–2023. This allows for a more robust analysis of variables such as satisfaction with democracy, perceptions of corruption, trust in the justice system, and the feeling of safety in the neighborhood.
The update also incorporates data up to 2024 from Latinobarómetro, with information available for 18 countries since 1996. This data includes indicators on the assessment of democracy, perceptions of state capture, political distrust, interpersonal trust, fear of crime, victimization, perceptions of distributive injustice, economic evaluation, income adequacy, intention to migrate, and trust in the police.
Finally, CEPALSTAT incorporated a new indicator developed from Gallup data: the Satisfaction with Life Index, with series available for the period 2014–2024, which provides a complementary perspective on subjective well-being in the region.
With this update, CEPALSTAT continues to strengthen its offering of regional statistics, contributing to the analysis of citizens' perceptions and the design of evidence-based public policies.
