Drawing on a variety of demographic sources and the most recent scientific literature, the publication provides information on the current situation of the countries in the region. It examines the varying fertility levels among countries and highlights the impact of motherhood postponement on these levels.

It also identifies key regional and socioeconomic inequalities related to fertility and the factors underlying observed changes. The document further addresses the challenges this new scenario poses from a public policy perspective, reviewing family policies and programs implemented in low-fertility contexts and their associated effects.

It recommends implementing family policies that promote work–family balance and strengthening the region’s statistical systems to better monitor the new demographic reality of its countries.
