Five Things You Should Know about the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2026

A few days before the start of our latest regional meeting to examine implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, we present five key points about this event:

  1. It will take place on April 13-16 at ECLAC’s headquarters in Chile

The ninth meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development will be held at the main headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile on April 13-16, 2026 under Peru’s leadership as Chair. The aim is to analyze progress and challenges related to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the region, with just four years remaining until the established deadline. 

  1. It will be officially inaugurated on April 14 and organized around dialogues

Diverse stakeholders will participate in a series of dialogues on global, regional and national action during the Forum’s 2026 edition. Ministers, deputy ministers, undersecretaries and other government authorities are expected to attend, along with representatives of the United Nations system, regional organizations, development banks, parliaments, academia, the private sector and civil society.

The opening ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 14, at 8:30 a.m. local time in Santiago, Chile (GMT-4) and will be led by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary; Jorge Félix Rubio, Director-General for Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru, the country serving as Chair of the Forum; and Li Junhua, the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations.

  1. It will feature the presentation of a new follow-up report on the 2030 Agenda and a series of prior activities and side events

On Tuesday, April 14, at 2:30 p.m. local time in Chile (GMT-4), ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, will present a document entitled The 2030 Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean: Accelerating Implementation in a New Era of Uncertainty and Geopolitical Fragmentation, ninth report on regional progress and challenges in relation to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

On Monday, April 13, three events will be held: the Forum of Children, Adolescents and Youth of Latin America and the Caribbean, the Meeting of the Mechanism for Civil Society Participation and the Interfaith Forum of the Ninth Meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development. In addition, at least 46 side events are due to take place.
