In a letter addressed to the President of the Republic of Turkey (Türkiye), Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, dated February 10, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) expressed its “deep sorrow and concern over the devastating effects of the earthquake” that struck that country on February 6 and conveyed its solidarity for the irreparable loss of life caused by this sad occurrence. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs of Costa Rica as Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Mr. Salazar will succeed Alicia Bárcena Ibarra of Mexico to whom the Secretary-General is deeply grateful for her commitment and dedicated service to the United Nations.
