The 2024 Demographic Observatory presents an analysis that shows that birth and death rates declined more rapidly than projected in 2000 - except during the pandemic - and that net migration was more negative than expected. The changes in the age structure of the population, driven by accelerated demographic shifts, as well as the persistent decline in fertility to below-replacement levels, present additional challenges to those already faced by the region, given its high levels of socioeconomic inequality and limited access to state-provided goods and services.
The population estimates and projections, including those of the labor force, as well as urban and rural populations disaggregated by sex and age groups for the period 1950–2100, are available at the following link: Excel files
