Session overview

This session brings together trade experts, economists, creative industry practitioners, and investors to explore the opportunities arising from the EU–Chile Interim Trade Agreement — which entered into force on 1 February 2025 — for the Dutch copyright and creative industries.

Key Context: The modernised EU–Chile agreement introduces strict copyright provisions, a protection term of life + 70 years, an updated digital trade chapter, and enhanced legal certainty for EU businesses. In the Netherlands, copyright-relevant industries account for 7.4% of national employment and 8.1% of FTEs (WIPO, 2025). In Chile, creative industries contribute up to 3% of GDP and directly generate over 150,000 jobs (WIPO / Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage of Chile, 2025). These figures on both sides underline the strategic relevance of the agreement for the creative sector.

Session Objectives

  • Present the intellectual property and copyright framework of the EU–Chile FTA.
  • Analyse the economic importance of copyright and related rights for creative industries in Chile and the Netherlands.
  • Showcase best practices in rights management and successful merchandising models.
  • Identify concrete investment and joint-project opportunities for Dutch stakeholders.

Target Audience

  • Dutch creative industry companies (music, publishing, audiovisual, gaming, design)
  • Investors and venture funds with an interest in Latin American creative markets
  • Intellectual property lawyers and copyright-related entities and ventures
  • Cultural and commercial attachés
  • Trade promotion organisations (RVO, NFIA, Netherlands Enterprise Agency)
