ECLAC and OHCHR sign cooperation agreement

22 April 2022|Briefing note

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, and the acting Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Mario Cimoli, signed a cooperation agreement on the Escazú Agreement in the framework of the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties, held in Santiago from 20 to 22 April 2022.

In the presence of former ECLAC Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, and OHCHR's Regional Representative for South America, Jan Jarab, both institutions committed to supporting the full and effective implementation of the Escazú Agreement from a human rights-based approach in four pillars: access to information, public participation, access to justice and human rights defenders in environmental matters.

ECLAC and OHCHR will carry out joint activities, disseminate information, develop training programmes and prepare studies and publications on matters related to the Escazú Agreement.

This is the third inter-institutional initiative concluded by ECLAC on the Escazú Agreement. Previously, agreements have been signed with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States and the Central-American Bank of Economic Integration.
