Sixth Meeting of the Statistical Conference of the
Americas Will Take Place in the Dominican Republic

 

Ministers, directors of national statistics offices and experts from international organizations will meet in Bávaro, Dominican Republic, in the Sixth meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC (SCA-ECLAC).

The meeting will take place from 16 to 18 November 2011 and will focus on the development of environmental statistics, the 2010 round of population censuses and the future challenges of national statistical systems, subjects that will be dealt in three seminars during the Conference.

During the first seminar, directors of the national statistics offices and representatives from central banks who will participate in the meeting will share different visions which the countries involved have of successful experiences in the production and use of environmental statistics.

In the seminar on the 2010 round of population censuses, participants will analyse innovative examples of the implementation of technologies and methodologies for quality control of census data, while in the seminar on existing and future challenges for the development of national statistical systems they will examine experiences of good practices for the implementation of these systems in the region.

A session organized by ECLAC, in coordination with the Government of Haiti, will take place during the Sixth meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas to discuss the support that the regional statistical community will provide for conducting the census in this country in 2013 and, in general, strengthening Haitian statistics.

They will also review the proposal for updating the Strategic Plan 2005-2015 which defines the mission, vision, specific strategic objectives and principal lines of action on which the Conference must focus its efforts towards 2015.

In addition, the proposal of the biennial programme of regional and international cooperation activities of the Conference for the biennium 2012-2013 will be presented. It considers four principal objectives: institutional strengthening, promotion of training of human resources, promotion and building of technical capacity, and promotion of international cooperation and coordination in the region.

The Member States must also review and adopt the implementation report of the biennial programme of regional and international cooperation for the biennium 2009-2011, and finally, they will elect a new Executive Committee for the Conference for 2011-2012.

The Statistical Conference of the Americas is a subsidiary body of ECLAC that promotes the development and improvement of national statistics and ensures that they are comparable internationally. It also promotes international, regional and bilateral cooperation in the area of statistics in the region.
