A new computer programme created through a Cooperation Agreement between Chile’s National Youth Institute (INJUV) and ECLAC allows users to access information on the situation of Chilean youths, which may contribute to improve their living conditions.
The INJUV-financed agreement allowed developing in Chile the third version of the Integrated System of Georeferenced Information on Youths, INJUMAP, a software that has already been applied in other countries, explained Alejandra Silva, Software Support Assistant at ECLAC’s Population Division (CELADE).
The programme consists of a system of indicators in which Internet users may obtain tables, graphs and charts to measure and compare different aspects of youths’ lives. Among them: their autonomy in social activities (education, family education, physical well-being, spatial mobility), economic situation and participation; the composition and structure of the youth population by age and gender; their labor and educational context; their social and cultural motivations and their life expectations.
These indicators are classified per region and municipality and may be organized by age group, urban-rural area, gender or poverty level.
CELADE processed the indicators and created the graphic design, structure and modules, and generated the databases that feed the system. It also created a CD version for independent distribution.
The system applied in Chile may be used online here.
