The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Keith Rowley, visited today the central headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, where he was received by its Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena. During the meeting, both officials agreed to increase bilateral cooperation and technical assistance, especially with regard to the economy and energy. Infrastructure Investment in Latin American and Caribbean Countries Remains Below the Needs of the Region

Latin American and Caribbean countries should invest around 6.2% of their annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to meet their infrastructure needs, but according to recent figures (2015) released by ECLAC, investment only amounts to 2.3% of GDP. According to the INFRALATAM database, which brings together data on the economic infrastructure investments being made by the region’s countries, 1.5% of these capital inflows around 2015 corresponded to the public sector while the remaining 0.8% came from the private sector. Disasters, economic growth and fiscal response in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, 1972-2010

The aim of this study is to estimate the impact of geological and climate-related disasters on the per capita growth rates of gross domestic product (GDP) and fiscal expenditure in Latin American and Caribbean countries. The results show that the effects vary by type of disaster and by subregion. In the Caribbean countries, the per capita GDP growth rate has typically responded negatively to climate disasters, whereas the response to a geological disaster has generally not been statistically significant. El objetivo de este trabajo es estimar el impacto de los desastres climáticos y geológicos en la tasa de crecimiento del producto interno bruto (PIB) per cápita y la tasa de crecimiento del gasto fiscal per cápita de los países de América Latina y el Caribe. Los resultados indican que hay efectos diferenciados por tipo de desastre y por subregiones.
