Sustainable Development Goals - SDG

Objective

The aim of the Statistical Coordination Group for the 2030 Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean is to coordinate the process of preparing and implementing regional indicators and to build relevant capacities, as part of the follow-up to the Sustainable Development Goals in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Group is established within the framework of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and carries out its activities in coordination with the work performed by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators and the activities and decisions of the High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Background

The established of the Statistical Coordination Group for the 2030 Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean responds to the request of the Member States of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC made during the eighth meeting of the Conference in November 2015 to define a new governance scheme for generate a regional plan of implementation to permit gradually cover the information requirements derived from the 2030 Agenda in the region. This is how the Executive Committee of the CEA at its fifteenth meeting in June 2016 approves the creation of the Statistical Coordination Group as a joint working mechanism to address the coordination actions regarding statistical information related to the SDGs.

The Statistical Coordination Group for the 2030 Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean is composed of representatives of the national statistical systems of the countries comprising the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators and the High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, ensuring the representation of subregional groupings.

 

Activities

The Group meets in-person or virtually twice a year, taking advantage of other regional or international statistical encounters on the calendars of the countries of the region. Between meetings, the Group carries out its work using an electronic platform that was set up for this purpose. The Group submits an annual report to the Executive Committee of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC, which will in turn report to the Conference. The Group shall subsequently apply the recommendations of the Conference on its activities.
