The workshop, organized on Tuesday, January 31st, 2023, took place at the Planta de Tratamiento de Aguas Servidas Mapucho-Trebal, of Aguas Andinas, potable water and sanitation company in Santiago, Chile. The event featured experts in the wastewater treatment process and representatives of potable water and sanitation agencies from Panama, El Salvador and Mexico.

The impact of COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine has increased the vulnerability of people without access to basic water, sanitation and electricity services in the region. Pre-existing inequalities have been exacerbated by post-pandemic job destruction, income reduction and rising energy costs. As part of an inclusive and transformative recovery in the region, these basic sectors must be prioritized.

ECLAC is interested in compiling points of view, experiences and proposals from Caribbean countries regarding their main challenges. Caribbean states are highly vulnerably due to the financial indebtedness and climate change and must receive adequate support, including through concessional funding and reestablishment of the liquidity they need. Thus, ECLAC wants to highlight the importance of these countries and focus its activities around the concept of “Caribbean first”.
