In its capacity as technical secretariat of the Escazú Agreement, ECLAC participated in the "Regional expert meeting on emerging human rights and planetary human responsibilities" and the "Regional symposium on planetary human responsibilities in the context of the climate crisis: contributions for the global debate on the rights of future generations in the international system", that took place in Cusco (Peru) between 27 and 28 March 2019.

In its 40th Session, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted without a vote Resolution A/HRC/40/L.22/Rev.1 “Recognizing the contribution of environmental human rights defenders to the enjoyment of human rights, environmental protection and sustainable development."

In his last report to the Human Rights Council, the Special Rapporteur on the issue of human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment, David R. Boyd, focused on the right to breathe clean air. He also described the negative impact of air pollution on the enjoyment of many human rights, in particular the right to life and the right to health, in particular by vulnerable groups.

In the interactive dialogue on toxic wastes and safe drinking water and sanitation of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva on 16 and 17 September 2015, the Special Rapporteurs on human rights and hazardous substances and wastes, Mr. Başkut Tuncak (Turkey), and on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation, Mr. Léo Heller (Brazil), highlighted the importance of the rights of access to information, participation and justice in environmental matters for their respective mandates.

The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on human rights and the environment (A/HRC/25/L.31) in its twenty-fifth session. It its resolution, the Council notes with appreciation the reports of the Independent Expert on the issue of human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
