An event held at the Open Society Foundation in New York brought together various stakeholders who have participated in the process of this treaty, which was already signed by 14 countries of the region today at UN headquarters.
The “Escazú Agreement” was opened for signing by Latin American and Caribbean States in a ceremony held in the context of the UN General Assembly in New York.
At a side event to the High-level Political Forum being held in New York, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, called on countries to sign the legal instrument.
Today the United Nations body joined the Steering Committee of InforMEA, a platform that brings together all multilateral environmental agreements worldwide.
The activity brings together 25 lawyers from 21 countries in the region and is organized by the UN Office of Legal Affairs, in collaboration with the government of Chile and ECLAC.
The legal instrument was adopted by 24 countries this past March 4 in Costa Rica. It will be open for signature by all governments of the region as of September 27.
