Investment landscape in Latin America and the Caribbean by ECLAC. Foreign Direct Investment inflows to Latin America and the Caribbean rebounded in 2021 after dropping sharply the previous year. There was a 40.7% increase over 2020, to 143 billions of dollars in 2021.

The Network of National Public Investment Systems of Latin America and the Caribbean (RedSNIP) was created in 2010 to strengthen the functioning of these state systems. It is currently made up of the directors of the SNIPs of the region and is supported by ECLAC, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

The countries of the region should invest 6.2% annually of their gross domestic product (GDP) in the 2012-2020 period –around 320 billion dollars- in order to close the existing gap between supply and demand of infrastructure. According to ECLAC, these investments in transport, energy, telecommunications and water and sanitation works help enlarge the coverage and quality of infrastructure services and foster the general welfare of the population.
