The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is participating in the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), a crucial milestone in the fight against the climate and ecological crisis, which is taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November to 12 December. The ECLAC delegation is headed by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of the regional body, who will participate in various sessions of the global forum. ECLAC updates every year its ranking of container port throughput, which shows the cargo volume in containers in 120 ports of the region, based on data obtained directly from port authorities and terminal operators. In 2017 this activity rose 6.1%, with a total volume of approximately 50.6 million TEU. This infographic displays the first 20 ports of the ranking.

The countries of the region should invest 6.2% annually of their gross domestic product (GDP) in the 2012-2020 period –around 320 billion dollars- in order to close the existing gap between supply and demand of infrastructure. According to ECLAC, these investments in transport, energy, telecommunications and water and sanitation works help enlarge the coverage and quality of infrastructure services and foster the general welfare of the population.
