The United Nations Statistical Commission, established in 1947, is the highest body of the global statistical system. It brings together the Chief Statisticians from member states from around the world. It is the highest decision-making body for international statistical activities especially the setting of statistical standards, the development of concepts and methods and their implementation at the national and international level. The Commission consists of 24 member countries of the United Nations, elected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council on the basis of an equitable geographical distribution. The term of office of members is four years.

The 57th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission is scheduled to be held from March 3 to 6, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters.

This 57th Session will focus on several high-priority themes under the overarching theme "Better Data, Better Lives":

  • Beyond GDP: Advancing a conceptual framework for measuring progress that complements GDP, focusing on well-being, sustainability, and equity.
  • AI in Statistics: Discussing AI-readiness and the use of artificial intelligence within National Statistical Offices (NSOs).
  • SDG Progress: Reviewing the work for the global monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Demographic & Social Statistics: Implementing a system approach for population and health data.
  • Agricultural Data: Endorsing guidelines for the 2030 World Round of Censuses of Agriculture.
