Latin American Authorities and Experts Will Analyse Poverty Measurement and Short-Term Economic Indicators

The Twelfth meeting of the Executive Committee of the Statistical Conference of the Americas (SCA) of ECLAC will be held from 24 to 26 April 2013 in Pucón, Chile, organized by this United Nations regional commission and the Chilean Government through the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

At the meeting, statistical authorities and experts from ECLAC Member States will use two substantive seminars to discuss current topics of great importance to decision-makers in the public, private and academic spheres: multidimensional poverty measurement and short-term and leading indicators in the light of the challenges of a globalized economy.

Delegates from participating countries at the 12th meeting of the Executive Committee of the SCA of ECLAC will also give progress reports on certain projects, including the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean, initiatives for the development of environmental statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean, activities of the Knowledge Transfer Network and the 2011 round of the International Comparison Programme.

Participants will also examine preparations for the seventh meeting of the ECLAC Statistical Conference of the Americas, scheduled for November 2013.

The meeting will be opened on Wednesday 24 April at 9.00 a.m. in the Gran Hotel de Pucón (Chile). Those in attendance will also review progress in implementing in the implementation of the Biennial programme of regional and international cooperation activities 2012-2013, approved by the sixth meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas in the Dominican Republic in November 2011.

The Statistical Conference of the Americas is a subsidiary body of ECLAC that promotes the development and improvement of national statistics, ensuring that they are comparable internationally, in addition to promoting international, regional and bilateral cooperation among national offices and international and regional agencies, as well as drawing up a biennial programme of regional and international cooperation activities, to meet the demands of the countries of the region.
