The sustainability of development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Latin America and the Caribbean are dependent on the region’s capacity to position itself in the global economy. Building this capacity will make it easier for the countries to obtain the resources with which to finance sustainable development and generate the kinds of high-quality, well-paid jobs to which their people aspire. Although the improvement of market access is vitally important, the countries also need to increase their competitiveness in order to take full advantage of that access.
