The Millennium Summit that gathered 189 States Members of the United Nations in September 2000, represented a landmark in the process of strengthening the capacity of the international community to deal with the world’s main development challenges.

The Summit was also the culmination of the consensuses reached during the previous decade in such fields as peace, security and disarmament, poverty eradication, human rights, protection of the environment, population and gender equity, and it refocused attention on the global development agenda.
