Distinguished Argentine Historian Tulio Halperin Will Deliver the Seventh Raúl Prebisch Memorial Lecture

(13 August 2007) Distinguished historian Tulio Halperin Donghi, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Berkeley, will deliver the seventh Raúl Prebisch Memorial Lecturewith a presentation entitled "Una mirada histórica sobre la CEPAL en su tiempo" (A Historical Look at ECLAC in its Era.)

The lecture will take place next Thursday, 16 August 2007 at 11:00 a.m., at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), in Santiago, Chile (Av. Dag Hammarskjöld 3477, Vitacura, Raúl Prebisch Conference Room). Opening the event will beJosé Luis Machinea, Executive Secretary of this United Nations regional commission.  

Born and schooled in Argentina, Professor Tulio Halperin holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Buenos Aires. He is currently the Muriel McKevitt Sonne Professor of Latin American History (emeritus) at the University of California, Berkeley.  During his long professional career, he has been professor of Argentine history at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral and the University of Buenos Aires, and has taught at Harvard (US), Oxford (UK) and the University of California, Berkeley.

Prof. Halperin is the author of numerous books, including "El pensamiento de Echeverría"(1951); "Tradición política española e ideología revolucionaria de Mayo" (1961); "Historia de la Universidad de Buenos Aires" (1962); "Argentina en el callejón" (1964); "Historia contemporánea de América Latina" (1969); "Hispanoamérica después de la Independencia"(1972); "El espejo de la historia. Problemas argentinos y perspectivas hispanoamericanas"(1987); "Vida y muerte de la República verdadera" (1999); and "La República imposible, 1930-1944" (2004), among others.

He has been the recipient of many awards, including the 1976 Clarence Haring Prize for the best work by a Latin American author for his study "Politics, Economics and Society in Argentina in the Revolutionary Period."  He holds honorary doctorate degrees from Argentine national universities in Luján, Córdoba and Rosario, and from Uruguay's República. Prof. Halperin is a recipient of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile Medal, and the American Historical Association Award for Scholarly Distinction, among other prizes.

The Raúl Prebisch Memorial Lecture Series was established in 2001 to commemorate the centennial of the birth of the Argentine economist Raúl Prebisch,  ECLAC Executive Secretary between 1950 and 1963.

Prebisch was an influential thinker on the theory and practice of development in Latin America and the Caribbean, and contributed to the work of the United Nations on behalf of a more equitable international order. Past lecturers include Brazilian economist Celso Furtado (2001); Nobel Prize laureate in Economics Joseph Stiglitz (2002); former President of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso (2003); former UNCTAD General-Secretary Rubens Ricupero (2004); John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (US) Professor of International Political Economy Dani Rodrik (2005); and Ibero-American Secretary-General Enrique Iglesias (2006).
