Roundtable on Impacts of Climate Change on Adaptive Policy in the Caribbean

The United Nations Economic Commission for LatinAmerica and the Caribbean (ECLAC) Subregional Headquarters for theCaribbean, will be hosting a roundtable to discuss the impacts of climate change on adaptive policy in the Caribbean. This meeting will take place on 30June 2010, at the ECLAC subregional headquarters for the Caribbean, 1 Chancery Lane,Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The main objectives of the meeting are to apprise participants of the initiatives on climatic modeling that have already been conducted in the Caribbean; to highlight existing initiatives on economic modeling for the region, and to share the expected work that would be conducted during implementation of the new initiative entitled: “Understanding potential economic impacts of climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)”.  The meeting will also seek to identify the body of knowledge that exists in determination of the economic impacts of climate change in the Caribbean, as well as to raise participant’s awareness of new initiatives in estimation of the economic impacts of potential climatic changes on such variables as production and trade, prices and income in the Caribbean. The updating of existing regional climate change policy with the results of recent economic assessments will also be discussed.

It is expected that discussions at this meeting, would serve to strengthen coordination and cooperation towards addressing the challenge of climate change in the Caribbean.  The meeting is expected to draw participation from experts in climatic modeling and in estimation of the economic impacts of climate change on small, developing economies.  Policymakers from select Caribbean countries would also participate as well as regional organizations such as the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and the University of the West Indies (UWI).
