Latin American and Caribbean Regional meeting of experts on International Migration in preparation for the High Level Dialog on International Migration and Development

The United Nations is convening the Second High Level Dialog on International Migration and Development to be held on October 3 and 4, 2013 at the headquarters in New York after a general debate that took place during the 68th session of the General Assembly.

In this context, ECLAC is organizing jointly with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the support of the UNFPA, the Latin American and Caribbean Regional meeting of experts on International Migration in preparation of the High Level Dialog on International Migration and Development. This is within the framework of the resolution A/C.2/67/L.15/Rev.1 dated December 2012 in which UN regional commissions and its sub regional offices, in collaboration with other UN organizations and the IOM, are expressly invited to organize discussion sessions and to assess regional aspects of international migration and development, providing inputs to the Dialog preparation process in accordance with its respective mandates.

The central theme of the dialog will be the identification of concrete measures to strengthen coherence and cooperation at all levels with the purpose of promoting benefits of international migration for migrants and countries, as well as reinforcing its important links with development and reducing, at the same time, its negative impacts.

The Latin American and Caribbean Regional meeting of experts on International Migration will aim at debating on the current status of relationships between international migration, human rights and development, emphasizing a Latin American and Caribbean vision that will contribute to the elaboration of policies, regulations and agreements on international migration. This event, which will take place at the headquarters of ECLAC in Santiago on July 10-11, 2013, will be organized in four plenary sessions and four roundtables which will be followed by its respective conclusions.

Strengthening partnerships and cooperation on international migration, mechanisms to effectively integrate migration into development policies, and promote coherence at all levels
International and regional labour mobility and its impact on development
